What are the most common forms of medical malpractice in diagnosing or treating colon cancer?

The probability that a patient will die from colon cancer is directly related to the stage of the malignancy when the cancer is diagnosed. If colon cancer is detected and properly treated before the cancer has spread beyond the colon, the chances of survival are significantly better than they are if the cancer is not detected until after it has spread. Any undue delay in diagnosing or treating colon cancer can have tragic consequences. Unfortunately, too often or screening is not offered or performed , warning signs are ignored, and treatment is delayed. The following are among the more common forms of negligence or medical malpractice by physicians in diagnosing and/or treating colon cancer:
  • Failing to perform a routine rectal examination, fecal occult blood test, and sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy;
  • Failing to test for colon cancer when a patient reports symptoms that can be caused by colon cancer;
  • Failing to follow up on the results of screening examination results;
  • Failing to recommend appropriate treatment options; and
  • Failing to follow-up with the patient
The above are only examples and are by no means intended to be an exhaustive list of acts of malpractice.
