Once it is determined that you have colon cancer, your doctor will explain the treatment options available to you and recommend the most appropriate option for you. The following treatment options are generally based upon the stage of the cancer.

1. Dukes A (Stage I, T1NOMO)
   1. Polypectomy or
   2. Surgical Resection

2. Dukes B1 and B2 (Stage II, T2NOMO and T3NOMO)
   1. Polypectomy or
   2. Surgical Resection

3. Dukes C (Stage III, TxN1M0 and TxN2M0)

   Depending upon whether there is blockage one of the following options will likely be recommended and/or performed:

   1. Surgical Resection and
   2. Adjuvant Chemotherapy
   or
   1. Colostomy and
   2. Adjuvant Chemotherapy


4. Dukes D (Stage IV, TxNxM1)

   Depending upon whether there is blockage and how far the cancer has metastasized, one of the following options will likely be recommended:

   1. Surgical Resection and
   2. Adjuvant Chemotherapy
   or
   1. Colostomy and
   2. Adjuvant Chemotherapy
   or
   1. Palliative Chemotherapy

In certain cases, the patient may have the option of participating in a clinical trial. The advantage of clinical trials is that a patient may be able to benefit from the most advanced treatments available. The possible disadvantage is that the patient may experience toxic effects that would not be present with standard treatments.
